About Velachery: This is a residential area in south Chennai, a metropolitan city in Tamil Nadu, India. The growth of velachery during the last decade can be cited due to the growth of the IT sector in south Chennai .It acts as an important hub connecting the rapidly growing business class information Technology corridor popularly called OMR, the more nature and well connected GST road and the central Business Districts of the city, which has more relevance to the history of chennai.Velechery as whole draws a perfect balance between old and new chennai and is a phenomenon in terms of growth. This was a quiet locally with swathes of farm land till the 1990s. Since then it become one of the prime residential neighborhoods of Chennai.
The Temple: The Velachery Ayyappan/Guruvayurappan Temple is located at Dhandeeswarar Nagar, Velachery, Chennai. Velachery Sree Ayyappa Baktha Jana Sabha was founded by Sri Vasudeva Guruswamy in 1968 and functioned from Karunambikai colony, velachery. Our Sabha founder Vasudeva Guruswamy was the first GURUSWAMY in Velachery. He has been elevated as the permanent Patron of the Sabha during 2004 and was guiding us till his demise.
During 1978 Dr. K.A. Damodaran Namboodiri, retired professor of IIT Chennai, donated a plot at 0/2 (New No.7) 4th cross street, Dhandeeswarar Nagar, Velachery, by a registered Gift Deed. Since then the Sabha is functioning at the same premises. A prayer Hall and an Annadana koodam was constructed and regular poojas, Bhajan and Annual Laksharchana and Annadanam were conducted there.
Constructing a Thirukovil for Lord Ayyappa was a long time ambition of the Ayyappa devotees of Velachery. With a view to fulfill their dreams, the then Office bearers and Shaba members resolved in their Annual General Body meeting to conduct a Devaprasanam to know the desire of Lord Ayyappan. The prediction at the Devaprasam revealed that two Thirukovil should be constructed for Lord Ayyappan and Lord Guruvayurappan with equal importance along with one shrine of Maha Ganapathy and another for Goddess Durga.
With the findings of the Devaprasanam, we approched Sri Kaanipayyur Krishnan Namboodiri, an authority in koil construction and vaasthu. As per his direction and guidance the construction of Thiriukovil started. Sri Thangappan Aachari of Perumbavoor, kerala, was the sthapathy and he constructed the Thirukovil. Prof. Aravindan, retired Head of Structual Engineer of IIT Chennai, was the honorary architect of the Thirukovil.
Some highlights of this temple: This is the only temple in Chennai, which has the Dasavatharam chiseled on the Alangara Gopuram. Moreover the temple has its first, as this is the only temple in Chennai where the Kumbabishekam for Shree Ayyappan and shree Guruvayurappan have been performed on the same day.
At this time, We remember and endorse the physical, financial and material contributions of the general public, businessmen, institutions, philanthropists, local body , our sabha members as well as the ardent devotees of Lord Ayyappan and Guruvayurappan.
